Myth-Land by Edward Hulme

Publication: 1886 Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & RivingtonFirst Edition

Bound in three-quarters calf with marbled boards and matching end papers. This is an association copy which is Signed by ArtieShawthe widely regarded Jazz clarinetist, author and movie star. Although Mr. Shaw rarely ever signed anything related to himself, he did sign the books in his personal library, this being one of them.

The book itself was authored by Edward Hulme and is a workdedicated to the lore of mythical animals.“Our subject very naturally divides itself into two obvious sections – the one dealing with wholly untrue and impossible creatures of the fancy, the other with the strange beliefs and fancies that have clustered round the real creatures we see around us.” It therefore touches upon stories about the Basilisk, the Cockatrice, the Chimera, the Unicorn, the Manticora, the Dragon, the Onocentaur, the Gorgon, Anthropophagi, the Phoenix, the Sphinx, Satyrs, Fauns, etc.”
