The 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 banknote was issued to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of Australian nationhood achieved on January the 1 st, 1901. A unique, one-year-only type, the 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 is the second of only two Australian commemorative note types, and the only commemorative $5.
Given that the 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 paid homage to the birth of Australia, it was appropriate that this unique banknote honoured individuals who made significant contributions to the march to nationhood. Sir Henry Parkes, the Father of Federation ‘ was pictured on the front of the note, with pioneering journalist, novelist, social reformer and politician Catherine Helen Spence on the back.
As with commemorative coins, the 2001 Centenary of Federation $5 note was plucked out of circulation by collector and non-collector alike. Consequently, it is virtually never seen in change today. Even if you were fortunate enough to find this note, it would not be in pristine condition as presented here.
