Encompassing both sides of a key juncture in Australian currency history, we are proud to present the Australia 1972-74 Phillips/Wheeler Commonwealth & Australia Banner $1-$20 Uncirculated 10-Note Set!
When decimal currency was introduced in 1966, the banner on Australias new notes was as it had been since the first predecimal notes were introduced in 1913 Commonwealth of Australia. The Australian Labor Party, elected in 1972 with Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister, sought to express our increasing independence from Britain in a variety of ways, including through our currency. Thus, in 1973, during the Phillips/Wheeler signature combination, that the banner on our notes changed from Commonwealth of Australia to read simply Australia.
Apart from being a bold statement of independence, this momentous change also created a highly collectable series. As a result of the modification of the banner, there were now Phillips/Wheeler notes from the $1 to $20 bearing the Commonwealth banner, and Phillips/Wheeler notes from the $1 to $20 bearing the Australia banner!
An irresistible opportunity to secure a comprehensive overview of this major landmark, we have Phillips/Wheeler Commonwealth and Australia notes for every denomination in strictly Uncirculated condition!
