The worldwide deflationary spiral saw Australias economy shrink, and the Melbourne Mint was not required to strike many coins from 1929 to 1933. No shillings or florins were struck in 1929 and 1930, for example, and no pennies were struck in 1930 or so it was thought. It is now believed that perhaps 3,000 were produced to test 1930-dated dies.

Having been stored away, these coins are likely to have been dispatched by the Mint with a later penny issue perhaps in 1931 or 1932 in fulfillment of a Commonwealth order. As the Commonwealth only ordered these coins because they were required for circulation, it is logical that the 1930 Penny is almost inevitably found in well-worn condition. From a tiny pool of remaining examples it is believed that no more than 1,500 of this illustrious rarity exist today the three coins we have in stock are in better-than-usually-seen Fine condition.
