Martin Van Buren succeeded Andrew Jackson as president, serving for one term in 1837. A favourite of Jacksons cabinet, Van Burens political theories were similar to Thomas Jeffersons in favouring the power of individual states over a strong, central federal government. From 1812 to 1820, he served two terms in the New York Senate State before becoming a member of Senate in 1821. When Jackson became president in 1829, he made Van Buren the Minister to Britain and in 1832, Van Buren was nominated the Democrats vice president. When Jackson stood down, he handpicked Van Buren to be the partys leader and at the next election, he successfully defeated his opponent. At the beginning of his presidency, the United States was financially stable but the Panic of 1837 began after a series of financial plunders caused the nation to slip into depression. At the next election in 1840, he lost the presidency after one term. Returning to his estate in
Kinderhook, Van Buren continued to be involved in politics pushing his antislavery policies. However, he could not sway his fellow politicians and watched the nation slip into civil war.
