John Adams was the first Vice President and second President of the United States. A Harvard-educated lawyer, Adams was identified as a patriot and a key leader in the campaign for independence from British rule. He was a delegate at the First and Second Continental Congress. During the ensuing years of the Revolution War, he served on diplomatic missions in France and Holland, organising a treaty of peace and trade between European countries. Returning to the United States at the end of the war, he served as Washingtons Vice President. His terms in this position frustrated a man of his ability, intellect and vanity. In 1796, he was elected the second President. During his years in office, war between France and Britain caused much political difficulties. After years of growing tension and undeclared war, France agreed to end the quasi war with the United States. At the next election, Adams lost his campaign to fellow Founding Father, Jefferson Thomas.
